Today I have been asked to play at the wedding reception of Christophe and David at the splendid venue of Studio 93in Garriochmill Road, right next to the stunning Botantic Gardens.
Studio is a photography studio but can be utilised as bespoke office space or (as it is today) a wedding reception venue with a fantastic courtyard and reception area.
I had been told that Christophe and David would be arriving with a big group of friends and family. Th weather was looking a bit changeable and having been at the World Pipe Band championships the day before I was hoping it wasn’t going to rain.
I decided to tune the pipes with a set of ¾ marches. The Green Hills of Tyrol, the Battle’s O’er and Lochanside. The sun eventually came out my pipes were sounding great and all was well.
I decided to air the Govan Schools and Community Pipes Bands March, Strathspey and Reel, ‘Donald MacLean’s Farewell to Oban, Highland Harry and Lexie McAskill’. It was sounding not too bad and I was happy with that performance.
Right on cue, I looked down Gariochmill Road to see a large group of kilted gentlemen and ladies in dazzling outfits making their way towards me, this was them! So, to hurry them along I played a couple of Jigs from the school’s bands repertoire, ‘Out of the Air’ and ‘The Fittie Boatman’
I should have mentioned that Christophe is from France and I had been told that his friends and family were looking forward to hearing the pipes. I repeated the jigs and the broke into the school’s medley. ‘The High Road to Gairloch, Mhari’s Wedding, Prince Charles Welcome to Lochaber and the Brown Haired Maid. The camera phones were out so I knew the playing had to be spot on, this performance was going back to France!!
Finally, all the guests were in and the Champagne was starting to flow. After couple more tunes, ‘Flower of Scotland’ and ‘Highland Cathedral’ (a special request from a friend and former colleague, Ian) my afternoon of piping was finished. I was invited in to take part in the celebrations. After a couple of delicious sandwiches and a cup of tea I headed for home.
I wish Christophe and David very best wishes for their future together.
